History of Ayurveda

Ayurveda is one of the oldest healing sciences in the world, originating in India more than 5000 years ago. Made of two words Ayus and Vedas, it literally translates as “the science of life”.  According to Hindu mythology, it is a knowledge handed down by Lord Brahma and documented in the holy scriptures called Veda. Ayurveda finds its mention in Atharva Veda dating back to 1200 BC.

This knowledge once passed down was translated into three main texts namely Charak Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, and Ashtanga Hridaya/Sangraha written by Acharya Charak, Acharya Sushruta, and Acharya Vagbhata, respectively.
